In 1995, upon the demise of local Dallas based death metal band Necrocide, drummer Brad Fincher and guitarist Braxton Henry (Both of Necrocide) along with former me-at-us vocalist Wayne Knupp set out to push the boundaries of what brutal death Metal was all about.
Wayne decided to move back to his hometown of Chicago, Brad moved to San Antonio, TX to get his education. Months later both Wayne and Brad moved back to the Dallas area and decided it was time to form what would become the most abhorrent form of musical abomination to ever exist in the history of underground death metal. However, Braxton Henry had in the meantime already formed a band known as DeadIndustry. Luckily Wayne knew a guy whom he called "The sickest guitarist ever" named Brain who he used to actually play with a few years before. What Brain was playing was a style that was uncompromising compared to a lot of other guitarists in the genre. His intensity was unmatched, period. So after finally contacting him, Brain was introduced to the band whom musically, he clicked with instantaneously.
Soon the trio put out a 2-song promo, which featured "Shroud Of Encryption" and "Festering Vomitous Mass". Several months later with the additions of then guitarist of Sintury Kevin Clark, and underground artist Mike Majewski, Devourment recorded one more song, Choking On Bile, which would be added to the 2-song promo resulting in the 1997 demo released by Corpsegristle Records that gained such a tremendous fan base. The demo would be entitled Impaled. With this line-up Devourment were a complete outfit. Or so they thought.
Wayne Knupp decided to leave the band due to some internal problems leading up to and during the trip to New York. Brain phoned Wayne and fired him from the band as soon as Wayne got back from being left in New York by the band. Wayne was tired of the internal bullshit within the band anyway and moved back to Chicago. The band would have a hard time finding a new vocalist, somebody who could most importantly, compare with Wayne's brutal vocal assault. Their choice would ultimately be guitarist/vocalist of local band Detrimental, Ruben Rosas, also a long time Devourment fan who often could be spotted at Devourment shows in the crowd checking the brutal grooves from a fans point of view. Ruben of course was heavily influenced by Wayne in the first place.
With the recruitment of Ruben came a lot of negative feedback, which understandably was because Wayne had a big pair of shoes to fill. However the band stuck with it and finally landed a record deal in 1999 with United Guttural Records and released the debut CD Molesting The Decapitated. Then the unthinkable happened. After playing possibly their sickest show ever with such bands as Macabre, Deaden, Cephalic Carnage and Fleshgrind, Ruben would be arrested as a fugitive from justice. Ironically this was also the same night that Molesting The Decapitated was released. Not knowing what to do, the band decided it was time to part ways. But due to the overwhelming response from fans worldwide, Devourment reformed minus Brain and adding once again Braxton Henry on guitars and none other than Wayne Knupp on Vocals.
Together they would record one new song entitled Baby Killer, which, would be released along with the 3 songs from the Impaled demo and the 8 songs from Molesting The Decapitated. The release would obviously be called 1.3.8. No shows would ever be played though and eventually the band all but faded out.
Finally after 2 1/2 years of incarceration, Ruben was set free. Upon his release he wasn't sure what would happen much less the impact Molesting The Decapitated had made on the death metal scene.
A few months passed and he began speaking with Kevin Clark about possibly reforming the band (Even though he had previously said he wouldn?t). By this time Brad had already joined a new band called Die-Section (now ZEROPOINTZERO), Mike was buried in his job and studies, and Brain, well he found religion and basically disappeared from the death metal scene all together.
So this left Kevin and Ruben the task of finding new members. Robert Moore who at one time played with local bands Dielzubro, Sputomy, Malthusia and Sect of Execration, was quickly introduced into the band as second guitarist. But the even bigger task of finding a drummer was at hand. After putting out ads and constantly searching for the right man, their new drummer would be someone they least expected. Jeremy (The Lemon) Peterson, whom had previously played short stints with Prophecy and Sect Of Execration assured the band that if they gave him the chance to try out, they wouldn't be disappointed. He was right. His drumming style will not disappoint even the most diehard fans.
Finally after a long search for a new bassist, they have recruited ex-Malthusia/Sect of Execration/Splatterday Saints/ and Necrotizing Fasciitis bassist Gabriel Ayala. It seemed only natural to bring him in after he has played in bands with both Robert and The Lemonhead. Not only will he be playing bass but he will also be doing some backup vocals. With the introduction of these 3 members, Devourment played some more concerts, but still failed to keep a full time line up, Long time Devourment guitarist Kevin Clark decided to leave the band after the James Murphy Benifest in Detroit. Being replaced at the Maryland Death Fest 2003 by Chris Hutto of Ingurgitate. After that gig the band decided to call it quits and finally allow the band to be put to rest once and for all. Even though they only released 9 full length songs in their history, Devourment will surely retain their international status as one of the most brutal bands on the fucking planet! Fuck yeah!
